Description of Slot machine terms

  • 3 Reel slots: slot machines with 3 reels which contain symbols.
  • 5 Reel slots: slot machines with 5 spinning reels with symbols on.
  • Bonus Feature: Some slot machines have additional bonus features that are like separate games and when these are activated (normally by getting certain symbols on the reels) they allow you to win money in a different way or increase the amount of your current win. One popular type of feature is a double or quits feature round where you can take a gamble to try and double your existing winnings but risk losing them all.
  • Bonus Slots: These are simply slot machines that have one or more bonus feature rounds
  • Coin Size: the amount of each bet, for example $1 (or £/€ depending on selected currency). The higher the coin size the more each go will cost you but the higher the win amounts will be.
  • Free slots: Slots that can be played without paying any money. These are played for fun rather than for gambling but you can play most slots for free before deciding to gamble on them.
  • Fruit Machine: This is the same thing as a slot machine but just a different term for them (used mainly in the United Kingdom)
  • Max Coins (Max Bet): This is the maximum number of coins you can bet in one go. On some slot machines you can select the number of coins as well as the coin size. It is normally best to select the maximum number of coins.
  • Multi-line slots (Multi pay-line slot machines): These are slots that have more than one pay line that you can win on. You can add additional coins to bet on the extra lines which increases your chance of winning, but also increases the cost of each bet
  • Multiplier Symbol: This is a wild symbol that also multiplies the amount you win by doubling it for example.
  • Payline: This is the line on which you must get the symbols to make a win. The win line is normally the middle symbol on each reel and on some slots the symbols have to be next to each other and starting from the far left reel (So 3 symbols the same and then two different would be a win but two different symbols followed by 3 the same would not be). Slot machines can have 1 or more pay lines.
  • Pay Table: This shows the different combinations of symbols that make up wins in the current game and how much each win is worth. The win amounts are often shown in coins (eg x10) and if you multiply this by your selected coin size then you will get the win amount (eg $1 x 10 = $10 win).
  • Payout Percentage: This is the average percentage of money bet that is returned to players. So if the payout percentage for a slot was 95% then a player would win an average of $95 for every $100 they bet. This is just the average- some players will win much higher than this and some lower. The payout percentage varies for each slot and for each casino.
  • Progressive Jackpot: A top win for a slot machine that keeps growing as more people play it (a percentage of each player’s stake is added to the jackpot each go). The jackpot gets bigger and bigger until someone wins it and it is then reset back to a starting value to begin increasing again.
  • Progressive slots: Slot machines with a progressive jackpot. Players normally have to bet the maximum number of coins allowed for a chance to win the progressive jackpot. These slot machines are often run across multiple casinos so the number of people playing them is very high which makes the jackpot value increase a lot more quickly.
  • Scatter Symbol: This symbol means that wins can appear anywhere on a line and the symbols don't need to be next to each other from left to right.
  • Symbols: The pictures on the reels such as cherries or oranges.
  • Wild Symbol: This can be used to count as any symbol to help make up wins. (You do not choose the symbol it is counted as- it automatically counts as the one that would give the biggest win)
